Time to take out the 'beefy' tooth!

The news was indeed a big resounding bang when the World Health Organization (WHO) released recommendations based on hundreds of studies finding that processed meat causes cancer and that red meat probably does too.

The report defines it as "meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, roasting, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation."

Red meat is defined as unprocessed mammalian muscle meat, such as beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, or goat meat, including minced or frozen meat. Most processed meat contains pork or beef, but also can include other red meats, poultry, and organs or blood.

These are some of the most common processed meats:

Bacon, ham, hotdogs, sausages, salami, corned beef, beef jerky, canned meat, meat-based sauces, kilishi, suya, bush meat, barbecued meat etc.

The authors found considerable evidence that processed meat is linked to colorectal cancer (or cancer of the colon and rectum), and to some extent, stomach cancer. There was not enough evidence to suggest that red meat causes cancer, but the report found a probable link.

And the risk of cancer is related to the amount of meat consumed.

According to studies cited in the WHO report, for every 50 grams of processed meat you eat per day (just over one beef hot dog), your risk of colorectal cancer goes up by 18%. And for every 100 grams of red meat you eat per day (slightly less than a quarter-pound burger), your colorectal cancer risk could go up by 17%.

But once you go above 140 grams of meat per day, the cancer risk peaks, meaning it doesn't get higher or lower once you eat that amount or more.

So what should we be doing?

It's really going to be sad for a lot of us to have to reduce or totally stay away from Suya, Kilishi, Barbecued meat, Roasted Chicken etc in our food, snacks and at our parties/events. But our health is the single most important factor in our continued existence. Imagine!

So if a lot of us should choose to take this advice and reduce meat consumption in any form, our abattoirs may start to record losses and our eateries would shut down if they don't respond smartly and fast too; our food consumption lifestyle at home would change; our snacks too would be affected. In summary, a lot of us would become vegetarians.

The way to go simply is to drastically reduce meat consumption (in whatever form or package) in our diet and snacks. Eat more of fish and crayfish (they digest faster). Every time legumes like beans, lentils, and peanuts are combined with grains like wheat, rice (unpolished type like ofada, abakaliki, if you can), and corn, a complete protein is born.

Add lots of grain (less of polished though) to your diet- beniseed, sesame seed, oats etc to your food and especially snacks.
Don't ever eat any meal without vegetable and fruits. They cut down the risk of cancer by large amounts

Vegetables in our diet

People who eat fruit and vegetables as part of their daily diet have a reduced risk of many chronic diseases. It is advisable to make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Vegetables are important part of healthy eating and provide a source of many nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate (folic acid) and vitamins A, E and C. Options like broccoli, spinach, tomatoes and garlic provide additional benefits, making them a superfood! Potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Dietary fiber from vegetables helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Folate (folic acid) helps the body form healthy red blood cells. Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant and those in the first trimester of pregnancy need adequate folate to reduce the risk of neural tube defects and spina bifida during fetal development. Eating Vegetables Provides Health Benefits 1. The nutrients in vegetables are vital for health and maintenance of your body. 2. Eating a diet rich in vegetables may reduce risk for stroke, cancer, heart diseases and type-2 diabetes.
